Does "de" always follow the title of "Marquis" in French nobility?

I know of the Marquis de Sade and the Marquis de Lafayette. I was just curious if the "de" is customary in the title? Does it mean "of"? So like...If John Doe was a Marquis, would his title be "Marquis de Doe"?
