What is the process for Section 8 in Indiana?

We are living with family and want to move out to be on our own again. First we wnated to try and find out some more information of Section 8, subsidized housing, and the Vouchers. Any help would be appreciated since we dont really know anything about these programs. My husband works full time. we have 2 kids and i know we will qualify for the help. We are looking into the Lafayette, IN area or the Indianapolis, IN area. How do we go about signing up? How long is the waiting list? Is it only apartments or do they have houses as well?
